Why a Trip to the Dentist Can Save Your Life…

At Clarendon Dental Arts, our focus is always on total health – Mouth, Mind and Body. We realize it might seem like a far reach for us to say, a trip to the dentist office could safe you life, but it can. Signs of inflammation in the mouth indicate infection, caused by bacteria, which can enter the bloodstream and cause heart attacks, diabetes and even cancer.
Many people that come to the dentist for their six month cleaning and exam, go to the dentist more often than their primary care doctor, so we are the first line of defense for overall health care. While inflammation is the main indicator, we also spend a lot of time talking to patients, understanding their diet and habits. Often, that conversation clues us in to the cause of dental issues, such as continual cavities.
Or, it can be as simple as visually seeing the patients face/throat, and noticing something irregular. Below is an article from the Washington Post that is a perfect case in point.
“Journee Woodard’s mom almost cancelled the appointment. The herculean task of wrangling four young children to the dentist was sometimes too much for two working parents. But they made it, and 11-year Journee was the last of the Woodard clan to sit in the dentist chair for her six-month cleaning.
That moment would turn out to be life changing. A week after Journee walked out of the dentist’s office in Edmond, Okla., doctors discovered a grapefruit-sized tumor on her pancreas, thanks to a tip from the family’s dentist and hygienist.” Read More: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2015/02/13/a-trip-to-the-dentist-helped-uncover-a-grapefruit-sized-tumor-and-saved-this-11-year-old-girls-life/
