Using Porcelain Veneers to Enhance the Smile
- Posted on: Dec 30 2018
Imperfections of the smile can negatively detract from an otherwise beautiful appearance. Patients with minor flaws such as chipped or stained teeth may find that they can work with a dentist at Clarendon Dental Arts to enhance their smile with the use of porcelain veneers.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are described as extremely thin ceramic facings that are custom-made to cover natural teeth near the front of the smile that may have imperfections. Veneers can cover teeth that are:
• Spaced apart
• Unusually shaped
How does a patient obtain a porcelain veneer?
First, patients undergo an initial evaluation with Dr. Danine Fresch Gray to determine if they are an appropriate candidate for the placement of porcelain veneers. Second, patients undergo preparations during which the dentist will file down a thin portion of the enamel from the front of the tooth’s surface. Third, impressions are made and mailed off to a dental laboratory with specific instructions for the fabrication of the porcelain veneers. Fourth, patients are called back into the office for an appointment during which the dentist will bond the porcelain veneers in place on the natural tooth.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Many patients choose these restorations because of their longevity. With proper care, many of our patients will enjoy their veneers for a decade or longer. It is often a more desirable choice than composite dental bonding, which only lasts a few years and is susceptible to staining.
